Y – Junction 2:2 Female 2 (2016) [YF 12/Sasha]

About

She was first sighted as a roughly 2/3-month-old cub, on the 27th of August, 2016, crossing the road from Warahana 2nd water hole towards the Mōdharagala side with her sister, the Y – Junction 2-2 female 1 and her mother, Thalgasmankada 2:3 female. These two happen to be the second known litter of the Thalgasmankada 2:3 female.

Since February 2017, they made regular appearances in and around the Y – Junction, Darshana Wewa Junction, and the Thalgasmankada Junction. The sisters were the talk of the town in the North part of Yāla block 01 for the year 2017. The sisters parted ways from their mother at the end of 2017. And our subject made consistent appearances around the areas of Warahana, Thalgasmankada, Darshana Wewa, and Mōdharagala.

On the 10th of May 2018, she was sighted in the Warahana area with a freshly killed fawn.

She was observed frequently around the above-mentioned areas in the first half of 2019. Starting from early 2019, she started to explore the areas of New Road and Sathmaga. In June 2020, her first litter was recorded when she was sighted with a single male cub, around the New Road. That cub was the Weera Wala 2:3 male.

Currently, her territory includes Mōdharagala, Sathmaga, Pemdas Vila, New Road, and Kohombakema areas.

In January 2021, she was seen at the Modhara Gala with another unrelated young female Agil Wala 2:2 female which was an interesting sighting. In April 2021 she was seen mating with Pemdas Vila 3:4 Male at Sathmaga close to Pemdas Vila. Galalukada Wewa 3:3 male was also seen in her territory from time to time although the mating was not observed.

She was seen with her second litter of three cubs for the first time in December 2021. Mother and the cubs were seen mostly around Sathmaga, New Road, and Kohombakema areas. She has proven herself as a very good mother that all three cubs (Kohomba-Kema 2:1 female, Kohomba-Kema 2:2 male, and Kohomba-Kema 3:3 male) were seen in excellent condition and grew up to adulthood. By early 2023 all three cubs started to disperse and find their territories.

By August 2023 she looked pregnant again and as we expected she revealed to us two cubs in December 2023. (This is her third known litter). By April 2024 she has brought only one of the cubs to the presence of safari vehicles, which makes it surprising. Thus far, other cub has remained a mystery. In June 2024, one of the cubs was unfortunately found dead near Pemdawila Junction and the Sath Vila Road 3:2 male (YM56/Raala) was spotted close to the body. And there were no records of the second cub also.

River Valley 2:1 Female [YF 67/Cherry]

River Valley 2:1 Female first appeared in the northern region of Yala Block 1 in August 2022, shortly after the untimely death of Kotabendi 1:2 Female. Following this event, River Valley 2:1 successfully claimed the vacant territory. Based on her lack of prior sightings, we speculate that she was likely born beyond the river in Block 2.
