{"id":2733,"date":"2021-01-18T19:55:25","date_gmt":"2021-01-18T19:55:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.leopardtrails.com\/leopardsofyala\/?p=2733"},"modified":"2024-07-16T19:12:37","modified_gmt":"2024-07-16T19:12:37","slug":"lolugas-wala-43-male","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leopardtrails.com\/leopardsofyala\/lolugas-wala-43-male\/","title":{"rendered":"L\u014dlugas Wala 4:3 Male (2018) [YM 44\/Jerry]"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">[<em>Lolu<\/em> = Glue berry\/Indian cherry <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bfnsrilanka.org\/friuts\/mango-41\" target=\"_blank\">(<em>Cordia dichotoma<\/em>)<\/a>, <em>Gas<\/em> = Tree, <em>Wala<\/em> = Waterhole]<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">L\u014dlugas Wala 4:3 male was first seen in November 2018 as a very young cub with his brother, the<\/mark> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leopardtrails.com\/leopardsofyala\/leopards-of-yala\/lolugas-wala-22-male\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Lolugas Wala 2:2 male<\/mark><\/strong><\/a>, <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">and sister, the<\/mark> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leopardtrails.com\/leopardsofyala\/leopards-of-yala\/lolugas-wala-34-female\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Lolugas Wala 3:4 female<\/mark><\/strong><\/a>. <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Their mother is the<\/mark> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leopardtrails.com\/leopardsofyala\/leopards-of-yala\/siyabalagas-wala-33-female\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Siyambalagas Wala 3:3 female<\/mark><\/strong><\/a> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">and this was her fourth known litter<\/mark>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">They were seen as a family around <strong>\u016araniya Road, Debaragas Wala, L\u014dlugas Wala, Palugas Wala 1&amp;2, Siyambalagas Wala, Welmalkema, and Kotigala.<\/strong><\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">By January 2020, this male had a wound on the left side of his neck but he recovered quickly. By mid-2020, he started to explore new areas that were away from his mother\u2019s territory. <\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">This male was seen at G\u014dnagala Wewa in September 2020 and he moved back to Kotigala in October 2020. On the 20<sup>th<\/sup> of October, there was a sighting of this male together with the dominant<\/mark> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leopardtrails.com\/leopardsofyala\/leopards-of-yala\/weli-aara-22-male\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Weli \u0100ra 2:2 male<\/mark><\/strong><\/a>, <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">on Kotigala. It was interesting to observe the dominant Weli \u0100ra 2:2 male tolerating this young male in close proximity. <\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">He returned to G\u014dnagala Wewa again in November and December 2020. This male was seen several times around the Idhdha Gala area with the dominant<\/mark> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leopardtrails.com\/leopardsofyala\/leopards-of-yala\/rathmal-wala-45-male\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Rathmal Wala 4:5 male<\/mark><\/strong><\/a> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">and once with the<\/mark> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leopardtrails.com\/leopardsofyala\/leopards-of-yala\/padi-kema-33-male\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Padi Kema 3:3 male<\/mark><\/strong> <\/a><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">as well. In the first half of 2021, he was mostly seen around the <strong>Galalukada Wewa<\/strong> and <strong>Sathmaga areas<\/strong>.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Then he started to move North of Yala Block 1. And he ended up around the Modharagala area by mid-2021. From time to time he was seen around <strong>Modharagala, Y &#8211; Junction, Thalgasmankada, Kotabendhi Wewa<\/strong>, and <strong>Koma Wewa areas<\/strong>. Once he had a tense encounter with the dominant but old male Medha Para 2:3 male (aka &#8216;J&#8217;) at Modharagala. Since early 2022 from time to time he was seen mating with two young females in the area<\/mark> <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Divul Kaele 2:2 female<\/mark><\/strong> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">and<\/mark> <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Agil Wala 2:2 female<\/mark><\/strong>. <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">In August 2022 this male was seen with a new female in block 1, around Thalgasmankada and Pan Wala area. Again in October 2022, he was seen mating with one of the old females the<\/mark> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leopardtrails.com\/leopardsofyala\/leopards-of-yala\/thalgasmankada-23-2\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Thalgasmankada 2:3 female<\/mark><\/strong><\/a> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">(who came back to her original territory after a long time). <\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">In December 2022, this male was seen engaging closely with the Kohomba-kema leopard family<\/mark> (<em><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Y &#8211; Junction 2:2 female<\/mark><\/strong> <\/em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"><em>and her 2021 litter of three cubs<\/em>) in the Modharaga area, providing us with a rare opportunity to see five leopards in the same frame. ( a leap of leopards). In February 2023 he was seen mating with<\/mark> <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Warahana 2:2 female<\/mark><\/strong> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">around Y-junction and Modharagala areas. <\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Within the year 2023 he was trying to expand his evergrowing territory. Between 2022 and 2023, he was expanding his territory faster than we anticipated.
