{"id":1688,"date":"2021-01-06T13:15:57","date_gmt":"2021-01-06T13:15:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.leopardtrails.com\/leopardsofyala\/?p=1688"},"modified":"2024-07-16T19:06:25","modified_gmt":"2024-07-16T19:06:25","slug":"rathmal-wala-44-female","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leopardtrails.com\/leopardsofyala\/rathmal-wala-44-female\/","title":{"rendered":"Rathmal Wala 4:4 Female (2014) [YF 02\/Jennie]"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">[Rathmal = Jungle geranium <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ixora_coccinea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(<em>Ixora coccinea)<\/em><\/a><em> , <\/em>Wala = waterhole]<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Rathmal Wala 4:4 female was the sister of the famous<\/mark> <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leopardtrails.com\/leopardsofyala\/leopards-of-yala\/rathmal-wala-45-male\/\" target=\"_blank\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Rathmal Wala 4:5 male<\/mark><\/a><\/strong> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">(Harak Hora\/Cattle Thief). They were first photographed together in 2014. There have been three cubs in their litter but only these two survived to adulthood. Their mother was the legendary<\/mark> <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leopardtrails.com\/leopardsofyala\/leopards-of-yala\/siyabalagas-wala-33-female\/\" target=\"_blank\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Siyambalagas Wala 3:3 female<\/mark><\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Since 2017, Rathmal Wala Female started to maintain a territory that highly overlaps with her mother\u2019s territory. She was seen around <strong>G\u014dnagala Road, Rathmal Wala, Karawgas Wala, Siyambalagas Wala, \u016araniya, Buthawa, and Buthawa Spill Road.<\/strong><\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">In June 2017, she was seen with the secretive<\/mark> <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leopardtrails.com\/leopardsofyala\/leopards-of-yala\/maynert-wewa-44-female\/\" target=\"_blank\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Meynert Wewa 4:4 female<\/mark><\/a><\/strong> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">at Spill Road, which was quite an interesting behavior to observe.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">She gave birth to two cubs in 2019 as her first litter. Only one of the cubs survived by the end of 2020. That cub is the<\/mark> <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leopardtrails.com\/leopardsofyala\/leopards-of-yala\/palugas-wala-42-female\/\" target=\"_blank\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Palugas Wala 4:2 Female<\/mark><\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">In December 2019 and January 2020, the Rathmal Wala 4:4 female and<\/mark> <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leopardtrails.com\/leopardsofyala\/leopards-of-yala\/welmal-kema-44-female\/\" target=\"_blank\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Welmalkema 4:4 female<\/mark><\/a><\/strong> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">were seen sharing the same territory and living in harmony around \u016araniya Road (Not every day you get to see something like this as leopards are territorial creatures). Making the behavior even more interesting, Rathmal Wala female was seen sharing a drinking space with Welmalkema female and<\/mark> <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Kaluwara Bokkuwa male<\/mark><\/strong> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">at Rathmalwala water hole in November 2020.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">In February 2021, Rathmal Wala Female&#8217;s second litter of two cubs was seen and photographed. They were seen around \u016araniya and Karawgas Wala in the following months. Since mid-2021, the Rathmal Wala female was missing in action. The apparent cause of her disappearance was not clear to us. The two orphaned male cubs were seen interacting with<strong> <\/strong><\/mark><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Lolugaswala 3:4 female<\/mark><\/strong> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">(which is a close relative &#8211; check the family tree) in August 2021. Then the two cubs decided to move to two opposite directions of their mother&#8217;s territory. <\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">[Out of the two cubs, the Karawgas Wala 3:4 male moved south towards Wilapalawa, while the Karawgas Wala 3:3 male moved north, towards Ruk Vila. The former went missing after November 2021.
